Experience the Valley

“…A landscape was displayed that after all my wanderings still appears as the most beautiful I have ever beheld. At my feet lay the Great Central Valley of California, level and flowery, like a lake of pure sunshine…” –John Muir

Erosion control at American River

The Central Valley consists of the Sacramento Valley to the North and the San Joaquin Valley to the South. Measuring over 400 miles in length, it is the fastest growing region in California. The Central Valley is one of the world's most productive agricultural regions. With the increasing population and the reduction of natural habitat in place of agricultural crops, there is a great need for volunteerism. The creation of housing for families in need, the restoration of wildlife habitat and native plant species, and the need to reduce pollution in our waterways requires the hands of many citizens to make positive impact. The Valley experience of MOVE is a great opportunity to connect with your local community.

  • Option 1: American River, Coloma Valley

This is a "golden" opportunity! The American River was at the heart of the California Gold Rush and now awaits you for two days of exploration. You will spend your first day working with volunteers from the American River Conservancy to do service in the Coloma Valley. That night your will retire to your river-side tent to enjoy a night of peaceful rest, and prepare for a day of white water rafting on Saturday. After a morning of lounging in camp, you will be professionally guided down the exciting rapids of the South Fork of the American River. This will be an exciting and refreshing adventure!

  • Option 2: Habitat for Humanity, San Joaquin Valley

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a non-profit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world. The San Joaquin County affiliate is charged with carrying out this effort. Your day with HFHI will allow you to contribute toward the building of homes in the San Joaquin and Central Valley area for deserving families. After a rewarding day of volunteering, you will travel to a retreat center in the Sierra Nevada mountain range to enjoy an evening around the campfire, munching on s'mores. Day 2 you will have the opportunity to hike the local foothills with fellow students and spend some time cooling off in a nearby lake. Experience an adventure that is right outside your door!

  • Option 3: Valley Stewardship, Central Valley

The Central Valley of California is home to the Delta waters and vast agricultural lands, as well as great places to recreate, including parks and river walks. On this experience you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the community by lending a hand to a local community organization that needs your help! After a rewarding day of volunteering, you will travel to a mountain retreat in the local foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Spend the evening admiring the stars and sharing s'mores with friends near the campfire. After waking in your bunkhouse, you will hike with your group to a nearby watering hole to splash around and cool off in the warm August air. This will be an amazing experience all around!

  • Option 4: Service in the San Joaquin, San Joaquin Valley

The San Joaquin Valley is home to a diverse assortment of people, agriculture, wildlife, and community needs. Most importantly, it is home to the University of the Pacific. Spend the day exploring your local region, while working alongside volunteers from local/regional community service organizations. After a rewarding day of service, you will travel to a beautiful foothill retreat center for the night. Enjoy some s'mores with new friends before bunking down for the evening. The next day will be a day to explore the nearby trails and take a dip in the pool. This will be a great time to create new friendships and make a difference in the San Joaquin Valley!

Waterbottles

Beginning In 2009, REELL Community students launched the 'Tap That' program at Pacific in an attempt to reduce the consumption of plastic water bottles. In support of their efforts, every MOVE participant will receive a reusable stainless steel water bottle provided by ASuop and the Pacific Alumni Association!
